This project started as a documentary exploring the stigma of sex work. Finding Joy began to take form as I researched the topic area. I found the existing media coverage was forceful in its narrative. I began to dive into Joy's life as an unwell single mother and performer. Amidst a cost of living crisis, many women like Joy are forced to take extreme steps for survival. This documentary covers the experience of Joy and how she is able to navigate life. The short film encompasses Joy's life, her relationship with her daughter and the complex layers that make up her existence. The film will be available on YouTube once through the university submission process. The hope is this documentary acquaints the viewer with the daily routine of the typical modern woman. Taking inspiration from Akerman the film's 'fly on the wall' format uses a similar theme to 'In Vanda's Room' with a narrative told entirely from within Joy's home. Navigating stigma from typical media portrayals of sex workers 'Finding Joy' provides a fresh perspective. A QR code will be added to the below poster to link directly to the film. These will be distributed as stickers and A5 posters once the film is released.
